WHY MERINO?
Naturally Hypoallergenic
Naturally Hypoallergenic
Less skin irritations for a happier child.
At Merino Kids, we understand how sensitive a baby’s skin can be — especially for children prone to eczema, dryness, or irritation. That’s why we choose superfine NZ merino wool for our sleeping bags and baby clothing.
With fibres measuring just 18.5 microns, our wool is super soft for wearing directly against the skin, offering gentle comfort and reducing the likelihood of irritation.
Multiple studies have shown that superfine merino wool is naturally hypoallergenic, making it an ideal choice for babies with sensitive skin or skin conditions such as eczema.
Unlike coarser wool types, superfine Merino wool does not cause the prickling sensation often associated with traditional wool garments (Source: Columbia Health, 2024).
What Makes Merino Wool Hypoallergenic?
The hypoallergenic nature of superfine Merino wool comes down to its fibre diameter and structure. Coarser wool fibres are more likely to irritate the skin due to their thickness and stiffness. In contrast, superfine Merino wool has a much finer fibre diameter, which makes it soft, flexible, and smooth against the skin (Source: New Mexico University, 2024).
According to scientific research, superfine and ultrafine wool blends — including Merino — are much less irritating to the skin and have even been shown to improve symptoms of eczema when worn regularly (Source: British Journal of Dematology, 2017).
Merino Wool and Eczema Relief
For children with eczema, choosing the right fabric is essential. Babies are predisposed to eczema because their skin barrier is more fragile than that of adults, allowing irritants and allergens to penetrate more easily.
This can lead to dryness, itching, and discomfort — especially during sleep (Source: Loma Linda University, 2019).
Superfine merino wool helps by creating a stable microclimate around the skin, reducing friction and maintaining consistent warmth. This can help prevent the itch-scratch cycle that worsens eczema symptoms.
Pediatricians at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital note that natural fibres with fewer chemicals and softer textures are better tolerated by infants with eczema. (Source: Loma Linda University, 2019).
